I Wanna Be Your Dog??

Taught grades 3/4 today and I had yard duty at lunch. All is pretty calm when all of a sudden a boy comes running up to me... I'm guessing he was about ten...

"Teacher, teacher," he cries. "No one wants to be my owner!!"

I glance down at this clearly distraught boy, wondering if I've heard right. "No one wants to be your OWNER?"

"Yeah!! I'm a dog and those two girls don't want to own me!"

I mean seriously, what do you say to these kids??? Should I just hand him a Stooges CD and let nature take its course?? I ended up going over to the girls and convincing them to play nicely... that an owner can always have two dogs... yowzers!!

And a very happy birthday to my second favourite Golden Girl, Rue McClanahan!!

random hockey spaz out

I don't normally write about hockey... i leave that to the experts... but today, oh glorious day, i'm going to break from tradition just to say that Joe Sakic is a heck of a guy doing a heck of a job... He's now the 17th player in NHL history to score 600 goals!! 600 GOALS!! He's brilliant, I say... which is why I once stole a poster of him off an undeserving fan's wall... it now hangs on the back of my bedroom door in my parents' house.

Sidenote... Peter Forsberg and Paul Kariya?? Sublime... they may not play for the Avalanche anymore, but I'm still all about these boys...

For the last couple of years, I've been eagerly anticipating the Wonderwoman movie for two reasons... One - Wonderwoman, duh??? Two - it was going to be written and directed by my massive writer/director crush/future husband, Joss Whedon. Then this week my world fell apart... first there was news that someone else had submitted a Wonderwoman script, but fans were told not to worry... So I pushed that troublesome worry to the back of my mind until apocalypse yesterday... Joss Whedon is no longer involved at any level with the movie because his concept of the movie didn't match the studio's concept of the movie... ARGH... I'm so disappointed that I may have to boycott the film...

Yes, this is what it takes for me to update... a little geek trauma...

Laundry Woes

It is time to rejoice, my friends... yes, at long last, I have a laundry basket!! WOO!! Now, some of you may be wondering why this is a cause for celebration... A laundry basket doesn't normally elicit squeals of joy, but for me, when my parents dropped off a bunch of things this weekend, I had to keep back aforementioned squeals. See, a few weeks ago I set out to do laundry. On my way to the laundry room, something got stuck on a door handle. I had no idea what was stuck, so I just tugged and tugged until I got loose. I get to the laundry room and as I'm unlocking the door I notice that I have a fine white powder all over my shirt... Lo and behold, the fine white powder is accumulating in a pile on the floor. Apparently, what got stuck was the box of laundry detergent and the tugging just resulted in a big fat hole!! After tipping the box on an angle so that no more detergent would escape, I threw my clothes in the laundry and began to think of ways to clean up the mess. I didn't want to be a terrible tenant and just leave it there!! So, lacking a vacuum, what's a girl to do?? I got my dustpan and used my hands to scoop the errant soap off the floor and into the dustpan. Alas, it was tedious; it was ineffectual and I ended up with a noseful of no-name detergent. Lovely... Now that I have a laundry basket, everything can get shoved in there and I'll be able to avoid such messes... And if I don't, at least my parents brought up my new shiny vacuum cleaner!!

So, apparently, Josh SUCKS at video game baseball... <strike>two</strike> make that four games, <strike>two</strike> four complete dominations... Nice boy, but not so skilled with the nintendo gamecube!! It's pitiful really... someone get this boy a coach!! Preferably the junior varsity equivalent of Joe Torre... now there's a man who knows his baseball...

PS... he also is a terrible, terrible hockey player... tsk tsk...

Moving On

Countdown... 2 days until moving day

My basement is currently in a state of massive disorder. I move to London on Saturday and so the last few days have been spent sorting through my belongings, deciding what is essential, what is disposable... It's a lot harder than I would have imagined. When I moved to Windsor for school last year, packing was a breeze... Maybe it's because then I knew that I would be coming home again... that my bedroom would be staying just that - MY bedroom... My mom's already talking about turning my room into a sewing room... Weird... I know this is a rite of passage that is long overdue and I'm all for it, but it's still freaking me out a little (or a lot, depending on the time of day). I keep having mini breakdowns when I question whether I've made the right decision.

Don't get me wrong... Most of the time, I'm insanely excited about the big move. I have these moments where I just think about having my own home and I literally squeal with excitement. No more sharing a bathroom with 4 other people... Actually having moments of pure silence that I know won't be interrupted by my brothers coming in like gangbusters with their friends... Being able to make Indian food at home without someone complaining about the smell of curry in the house... And joy... no more roommates!! I'm still not sure what's worse... roommates or brothers, but I don't have to worry about it anymore!! I'm free, baby...

I get home from volunteering in a kindergarten class today and my mom comes running into the kitchen. "LISTEN TO MESSAGE THREE" she shouts. Slightly afraid, I push the button on the answering machine and begin listening. All I can say is YAY!! I finally have an interview for supply teaching!! This means that on Thursday, I get to take a 2.5 hour bus ride to London for what promises to be the shortest interview I've ever had - 10 minutes!! I then have until 5:30 to kill before I can catch the bus home. Argh... but still YAY!

We like dancing and we look divine

I'm getting grief from a certain someone (you know who you are!!) about updating... So, this is all for you, baby!!

A couple of weeks ago, I had what will probably count as one of my best birthdays ever. It ranks up there with the year I had my birthday party at the McDonalds with the caboose and we got to sit in the caboose, pretending we were on a lengthy birthday party train ride. I also got a stylin' tape recorder complete with microphone!! I was six... So, up comes my birthday and Tanya takes over the planning. The second she claimed responsibility for the planning, I knew I was in for an awesome time.

Tanya and Peter pick me up at the train station in Toronto and thus began the night's adventures. Confused about the location of the restaurant (was it near the AGO or the ROM???), we drove around for a while before I convinced them to tell me the name of the street for which we were looking. First victory of the night - I knew where to go!! Sometimes keeping secrets from the birthday girl is counterproductive!! We ended up on one of my favourite streets in Toronto, eating dinner at one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto. What are the odds of that?? Of all the many eateries in Toronto, she picks one of my favourites?? We ate a fabulous dinner with my friend Olivia and her sister and I got presents!! WOO for presents!! Tanya and Peter got me the best t-shirt ever... it's so very me. It's pink!! And has a sparkly heart and the words "Mrs Joaquin Phoenix" emblazoned on it... sigh, I would marry this shirt if I could... Wait, there are a lot of pieces of clothing or pairs of shoes I would marry... I'm such a fashion whore... From Olivia, I got a bamboo box (perfect for pencils and other teacherly accoutrements) and a nice little book that has what looks like an abstract-ish version of the london underground symbol on it! Back at the car, Peter breaks out the last of the brilliant gifts; he hands me his copy of Belle and Sebastian's Tigermilk... ON VINYL!! Lovely people, these friends of mine.

After dinner comes the next surprise... we drive along Bloor Street until we come to Little Korea... oh, that's right, it's karaoke time, my friends. We were joined at this point by my friend Mark which was awesome because I wasn't expecting him to show up. We get our little room... we pick our songs and the humiliation begins. Dusty Springfield (you haven't lived until you hear Mark sing in a high, girly voice), Cake, the Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Aerosmith (I still maintain that Pink is a TERRIBLE song!!), Christmas carols, Blondie... our song selection was varied and at times, highly suspect. Peter won the singer of the evening award with his rendition of "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cake. Much embarrassment and a few beers later, we headed for the final stop of the evening.

Oh Neutral, how deceiving appearances can be... The club looks brightly lit and somehow sketchy at the same time, but we persist. We head downstairs (I've come to the realization that all good clubs require stairs) and the place is empty... we exchange glances, buy some drinks and claim a table. We have conversations that are far too serious and eventually the club fills up. We begin to dance and I decide that this may be on the greatest places on earth. Since I was 12 years old, I've wanted to dance to "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles and I finally get my wish. Tanya and I get hit on by two gangsta-type guys... we send random text messages and leave drunken rambles on the voicemail of a friend who is too far away.. and generally have an awesome time.

On the way up to Yonge Street to catch the drunk bus, I give a guy a fake phone number... the first time I've ever had to do that... Generally I think that's a low thing to do to someone, but if after ten minutes of "no, i'm not interested" he still persists, fake away, ladies... That's my new philosophy... We end up back at Peter's dad's house and sleep until the afternoon... well rested but still feeling the need for more dancing...

And so went my birthday...

In other news, I had a dream last night that my family and I were in a forest near a lake when a bear attacked me. My dad ran for a gun as I tried to swim away from the bear... somehow I ended up crushing its jaw with my bare hands (yes, I am THAT powerful) and then I started to cry because now the bear was going to starve to death. For this odd dream, I blame Josh... and Mike to some extent.

P.S. Tanya looked super hot... good job, Peter!!

V for Victory

Take that, evil knit stitch!! I'm enormously excited to announce that I completed my first knitting project this morning!!! That's right - my brother is now the proud owner of an original (and kind of lumpy) scarf made by his loving sister. True, it's a little short, but my brother is no fashion icon. He doesn't need a sweeping scarf to wrap saucily around his neck a few times. He's the wrap and tuck type.

With my victory firmly in place, I decided to take on the purl stitch. Let me just say, it's the most awkward thing I've ever done with my hands. It sure looks pretty though... especially in my nice new teal yarn...

I realized today that I never wrote anything about my graduation weekend... Weird, considering it was a) a supremely fantastic weekend and I got to see so many friends that I miss terribly when I'm back in Hamilton and b) a rather momentous occasion. With the old adage better late than never in mind, I'm going to rectify that mistake.

Since I'm a big fan of lists, here's my top ten highlights of that weekend (in no particular order)...

1. that weird toy made out of little, sticky foam balls... it kept me entertained for hours - literally!!
2. my own personal cheerleading section who embarrassed the hell out of me when i received my diploma
3. realizing that no matter what, Ryan will always have the most bizarre stories to tell
4. Tanya's flaming cheese falling to the floor
5. one last breakfast as students at Ferarri's
6. Mike's raves about the 3-D plates
7. playing with Josh's hair... he just looked so purty...
8. spending time like Tanya like we used to before we moved back to separate cities
9. going to bed on Saturday night
10. waking up on Sunday morning

One of the biggest mysteries in my life is how I can be infinitely patient with other people, but I have no patience when it comes to me. Eight year olds can pick up knitting, but I can barely get one row done without screwing something up! Argh...

On the plus side, I can now create a slipknot like no one's business and casting on is a breeze... That's about as far as it goes though. Once I get to the part where I actually need to create knit stitches, it gets ugly. I pity the first person who gets a scarf I've made... it's likely to have lots of holes and be oddly shaped. I'm sure the recipient will adore it (right, Tanya?? you love me, right??)

Everyone needs a hobby

So, working part-time is leaving me with a lot of free time on my tiny hands. Following a conversation with Josh, I set my mind on finding the perfect hobby. Tonight, while browsing through a bookstore, I think I found it. KNITTING!! Yep, it's been enjoying quite the comeback of late. My mom is a crazy knitter and is constantly making things for friends and family. I remember being a little girl and my mom knitting this brown and creme coloured dress for my favourite Barbie. I want to be able to do that!! Only, not for my Barbies... yes, I still have Barbies, but I don't change their clothes anymore! Duh!

I've armed myself with knitting needles, a ball of yarn, a stitch holder and the hip girl's guide to knitting, Stitch and Bitch. I'm sure this is going to be an amusing and frustrating hobby, so expect updates on my progress!

Saddest day EVER... well, maybe not EVER

Sleater-Kinney is no more??? I come home from a long day working with the jerk who made me cry yesterday to find out that one of my favourite bands has split up!!! ACK... I think I'll put on my favourite sad Sleater-Kinney songs, burrow into my bed and cry myself to sleep... (oh how melodramatic I become when I'm tired).

I am rather drunk at the moment, so I apologize in advance if this comes off as rambling and/or incoherent. Today I saw one of my best friends get married. When I say best friend, I honestly mean best friend. This is one of the few people in my life who has always given me the best of advice and always been there for me. Sometimes her advice wasn't necessarily what I wanted to hear, but she was never wrong... sometimes you have friends who give you advice with something other than your best interest in mind, whether intentionally or not. She has never given me that kind of advice. True, she's older than most of my friends, so she has the benefit of experience on her side, but she has to be that most elusive of creatures - the completely altruistic friend. You know the kind I'm talking about (and I hope that you have been lucky enough to have one of these in your ranks). She will tell you the truth no matter what. Sometimes it's ugly (yes, Sherri, you need to get Greg out of your life completely) and you don't necessarily pay immediate attention. Other times, it's what you just needed to hear out loud (yes, Sherri, you need to go to teacher's college). So, I'm sitting there today, watching this woman who swore she would never get married again do exactly that. She said the whole "I do" rigamrole in front of family and friends and I must say I count myself lucky to be amidst that privileged group. I know I'm a big sucker for sentiment, but I never thought I'd be one of those girls who cry at weddings. As soon as I saw her walking down the aisle, I began to well up. It was such a simple wedding, but it was so beautiful!! And yes, I'm even sappier when I'm drunk (and more prone to tears, so thank god I was sober for the ceremony - the vows would have been overpowered), but I stand by my statement. As for you, my dear friend, I wish you all the best... you deserve it... I'm glad you found your Prince Charming.

Today was my last day volunteering at my old elementary school. I've spent two days a week, helping out in a j/k class and a j/k-s/k split. Those days made me realize that no matter how cute those kids may be, I hope, with fingers crossed, that I don't end up with a job teaching kindergarten (I should add a disclaimer here - I loved every minute I spent with those students). It's just so exhausting! You constantly have kids scrambling up on your lap - sometimes two or three at a time while others fight over who gets to sit at your feet. These kids are used to having so much attention and they're not accustomed to sharing that attention, I get that. I just don't want to have to deal with it for 6 hours a day. Hats off to all those that do teach kindergarten - they should get medals!

I'm starting to get frustrated with the whole teacher-job search. I know that I've been out of school for less than two months and that boards continue to hire up until the middle of September, but that's logical thinking. I'm not a logical person. Supposedly, there are all these jobs for new teachers available, but where are they? Oh, right, they're in Guelph! Guelph?!? I've already been told by various people to move to Windsor and London (you know who you are!!) and now my mom's telling me that I should think about moving to Guelph. It seems funny that I moved home just to think about moving again. Part of me just wants to pack my bags and catch that flight to England, regardless of how terrible the schools are. Ugh... when is all this job search rigamarole going to end??

My brother's girlfriend decided to buy him a futon. Nice girl, huh? Except that now I get the hand me down bed. How does that work? I'm the oldest... aren't I supposed to be the one handing off all my old stuff? There's no one to help me move the bed into my room and I have no choice but to do it now because the box spring is currently blocking my door. Here I am moving the box spring and my leg gets horrendously caught between the bed frame and the box spring. That's a surefire way to end up with an ugly bruise, let me tell you. Another reason to dislike this girlfriend - inadvertently she's maimed me!! Argh... venting does wonders for the soul.

Sunshine and Lollipops

After a morning spent making Mother's Day cards with the kindergarten class in which I'm volunteering, I met up with Duncan. We went for slurpees at 7-Eleven, grabbed some sugar for that essential rush and headed to Gage Park. Oh, glorious Gage Park, how I love thee!! How I've missed thee!!

For the first time in almost two weeks, I was happy to be back in Hamilton today. It was one of those pretty fantastic days - warm, but still cool enough to wear a sweater and not end up drippy and soggy from the sweat. The walk in the park reminded me of how direly I want a dog... there was a ridiculous amount of ridiculously adorable dogs strolling the park (owners in tow, of course) and I'm pretty sure Duncan came close to puppy-napping when he spotted a dachshund. We then decided that if he ever gets a dachshund, he will need to get it a cape. I'm thinking black with a pink satin lining (do it, Duncan)!

I'm starting to feel restless... like I need to go somewhere... Wanderlust, that's it! I should probably think about getting a job and finding a place to live before I think about travelling again though. Maybe considering where I'm going to settle my bones for the next few years would be a good next step (uh oh, good next step + teacher talk). Any ideas? I'm up for another move!!

I love your friends... they're all so arty

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated last. When I was younger and thought that I was much more brilliant and talented than I actually am, I wanted to be a writer. Of course, I thought to myself, all writers worth their salt keep diaries or journals. I bought myself a ornate hardcover journal in which to chronicle my life. I'd write it for a month at most and then put it aside. Every once in a while, I'll get the urge to chronicle again and I'll buy a new journal. The point? I'm useless when it comes to documenting the events of my life! Yet I keep trying!

Only 1.5 months until I'm finished teacher's college! That is a frightening thought! My current dilemma (as you know I always have a dilemma or two!) is whether or not I should go teach in Europe, specifically England, for a couple of years or try to snag a job in the Toronto area. I've heard some horror stories about the school system in the U.K., but part of me is willing to brave it simply because it would allow me to live there! Beyond the sheer joy of living in the U.K. and being able to eat Cadbury Buttons whenever the urge took me, travel to anywhere else in Europe is ridiculously cheap!! And as everyone knows, no one gets better vacation time than teachers! I need to make this decision by March 31, so any input would be much appreciated!!

I'm excited about the weekend coming up... Cuff the Duke!! We're finally going to frequent PHOG, much to Tanya's joy... and of course, there may be the obligatory stop at the Loop... time will tell... no skinned knees or slurred words this weekend though!

so, i think i may have possibly just had the best first date ever... it was an odd date... we went out to a pub for drinks and then wandered around 2 old cemetaries in windsor... yes, it was dark and yes, it's practically a full moon out... it was suitably spooky and suitably romantic... he just held my hand the entire time and it was so ridiculously sweet... there were only 2 awkward silences at the beginning of the evening, but even they were relatively charming... i think this is the first time in a long time where i've been all "god, i hope he calls me soon." he's reduced to me to giggly schoolgirl... the first time he touched my hand, i actually got goosebumps... it's a goddamned cliche... le sigh... make that double, no triple sighs... and i listened to tanya's advice... i didn't kiss him... he MAY have kissed me, but i more or less pushed him away... and can i just say, i have NEVER wanted to kiss someone so badly in my life... nor have i ever been so attached to a bloody maple leaf in my life...

here you go, girl (that's my whoopi goldberg impression!)

ok, so duncan has harassed me to post... so here goes...

List five songs that you adore right now. It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artist, and the song in your journal, then tag five other people to see what they're listening to

1. a woman left lonely - janis joplin
2. let's call it love - sleater-kinney
3. banana pancakes - jack johnson
4. so happy together - the turtles
5. daydream believer - the monkees

Things you enjoy, even when no one around you wants to go out and play. What lowers your stress/blood pressure/anxiety level? Make a list, post it to your journal, and then tag 5 friends and ask them to post it to theirs.

1. reading mystery novels
2. baking
3. walking with bare feet through the grass
4. bubble baths with strawberry scented bubbles
5. watching bad girly movies

god, i'm such a girl...

ok, so since i only have three friends on this livejournal thing and two of them have already been "tagged," that leaves you, Tower of Power... go nuts...
